The inauguration of the GNU/Linux User Group (GLUG) was conducted on Feb 8,2025 at
our institution to promote awareness and adoption of Linux and Free and Open-Source
Software (FOSS). This initiative provides a platform for students to collaborate, learn,
and contribute to the open-source community.
The event featured guests Mr. Dhanasekar, Mr. Parameshwaran, Mr. Thanga Ayyanar,
Mr. Mohamed Salman and Mr. Syed Jafer, who shared their experiences and emphasized
the importance of open-source contributions. They discussed the role of Linux in various
industries and encouraged students to actively participate in the FOSS ecosystem. This
event was made possible with the support of St. Joseph’s Group of Institutions, which
provided the necessary resources and encouragement to establish GLUG.
Attendees found the session valuable, stating that it helped them understand the
relevance of Linux and open-source technologies. Many appreciated the practical
insights shared by the speakers, which clarified how students can start contributing to
open-source projects. Some participants mentioned that the Q&A sessions were
particularly useful in addressing their doubts about Linux and its applications.
GLUG will organize workshops, technical talks, and hands-on sessions to help students
build skills in Linux and FOSS. There are also plans to collaborate with industry experts
and open-source contributors to provide more learning opportunities. This inauguration
marks the beginning of an effort to create an active open-source community within the
institution. Through continuous participation and collaboration, students will have the
opportunity to develop practical skills and contribute to meaningful projects.
