Efforts to develop critical thinking falter in practice because too many professors still lecture to passive audiences instead of challenging students to apply what they have learned to new questions
- Derek Bok

Faculty development refers to a range of activities that are perceived to help academicians in improving their professional skills that are vital for carrying out their teaching, research or administrative activities in education.

Faculty members need to be prepared enough by some sort of a Faculty development program (FDP) in order to deal with the rapid changes and shifting paradigms in education and practice.

Without such training, teaching is often reduced to instructors presenting their understanding of the subject by one-way lecturing.
